modal verbs & their negatives

The four modal verbs are easy enough — until you negate them. 'Mustn't' and 'don't have to' are completely different in Slovene, and getting them mixed up changes the meaning entirely. About seven minutes.

morati (must) — moram iti; but its negative is ni mi treba = don't have to (not 'mustn't'). moči (can / be able) — lahko grem, negative ne morem (I can't). smeti (be allowed) — smem; negative ne smem = mustn't / not allowed. hoteti (want) — hočem, negative nočem. The trap: ne smem kaditi (I'm forbidden to smoke) vs ni mi treba kaditi (I don't need to smoke). Watch that one.
