A few set phrases carry an astonishing amount of weight. Dober dan (good day) is the safe, polite all-rounder; živjo is the casual 'hi'. Prosim means both 'please' and 'you're welcome'; hvala is 'thank you'. Oprostite covers 'excuse me' and 'sorry'. And the two smallest, most useful words of all: da (yes) and ne (no).
