what time is it?

Asking and telling the time has one famous twist in Slovene: half-hours look forward, not back. Half past two is 'half of three'. Learn the key words and the pattern clicks. Pick the word, then drill. About six minutes.

Ask with Koliko je ura? (what's the time?). Answer the full hour with Ura je + number: Ura je tri (it's three). The twist: half-hours look forward — pol treh is literally 'half of the third hour' = 2:30. Quarters use četrt. And the parts of the day: zjutraj (morning), opoldne (noon), zvečer (evening), opolnoči (midnight). To say 'at' a time, use ob: ob treh (at three).
