turn verbs into nouns — the register of essays
Formal Slovene prefers a nominal style: instead of ohranjamo dediščino (we preserve heritage) it writes ohranjanje dediščine (the preservation of heritage). Most imperfective verbs form a glagolnik (verbal noun) in -nje: brati → branje, ustvarjati → ustvarjanje. The verbal noun lets you make an action the subject of a sentence — the hallmark of essays, reports and argument.

Kultura je ogledalo naroda. Slovenska dediščina sega od srednjeveških gradov in cerkva do bogate ljudske glasbe in literature. Ohranjanje te dediščine ni le skrb muzejev, temveč odgovornost vseh nas. Ustvarjalnost sodobnih umetnikov nadgrajuje izročilo prednikov in mu daje nov pomen. Prav raznolikost kultur bogati družbo in krepi medsebojno razumevanje. Culture is the mirror of a nation. Slovene heritage stretches from medieval castles and churches to a rich folk music and literature. Preserving this heritage is not only the concern of museums, but the responsibility of all of us. The creativity of contemporary artists builds on the tradition of the ancestors and gives it new meaning. It is precisely the diversity of cultures that enriches society and strengthens mutual understanding. Investing in culture is investing in a shared future.
