For a small nation, language is the foundation of identity. Slovene survived for centuries among larger languages, even though it had no state of its own. It was books, schools and songs that kept the language alive. Today Slovene is not endangered, but globalisation and English bring new pressures. Caring for one's mother tongue is not backwardness but a condition of remaining what we are.
