Slovene word order is flexible — you front a word to stress it — but the clitics obey an iron rule: second position. This lesson is about controlling emphasis. About seven minutes.

Slovene word order is pragmatically free: the neutral order is subject–verb–object, but you front whatever you want to emphasise (Knjigo bere Janez stresses the book). New, weighty information tends to come last (end-focus). The catch: clitics (ga, je, se, mi…) sit in second position (Wackernagel's law) regardless — Videl ga je, never *Videl je ga. The particle pa marks contrast.
