The imperfective can mark a process or an attempt: učil sem se, a se nisem naučil (I studied but didn't learn it). The perfective marks a single boundary or sudden change: nenadoma je razumel (he suddenly understood). Habits and duration take the imperfective; a finished result takes the perfective.
