negation — ne and its family

To disagree, refuse, or say you don't have something, you need negation. Slovene mostly just puts ne in front of the verb — but a few verbs fuse with it (nisem, nimam). Slot each negative into place, then drill. About six minutes.

Most negation is simple: put ne before the verb — ne govorim (I don't speak). But two everyday verbs fuse with it: biti → nisem (I am not), imeti → nimam (I don't have), and 'there isn't' is ni. Unlike English, Slovene happily stacks negatives: nikoli ne jem (lit. 'never not eat') = I never eat. Useful negatives: nič (nothing), nikoli (never).
