The single most useful courtesy word in Slovene is bi. 'Rad bi…' (I'd like…) and 'Ali bi…?' (Would you…?) make any request soft and polite — far nicer than a blunt 'I want'. About six minutes.

bi (would) is the politeness engine. Rad bi = I'd like — with rad / rada agreeing with the speaker: Rad bi kavo. (I'd like a coffee — m.) Rada bi mizo za dva. (f.) Polite requests open with Ali bi …? (Would you …?): Ali bi mi pomagali? (Would you help me?) And wishes: Bi šel s teboj. (I'd go with you.) All far gentler than a bare imperative or hočem.
